25 % of Danish children receive some form of orthodontic treatment before transitioning to adult dental care. The appointment of Peter Stoustrup as professor at the Department of Dentistry and Oral Health is therefore good news for both the field and its patients.
“In my research, I focus on developing effective, safe and patient-centered orthodontic treatment modalities and procedures. This includes young patients in pediatric dental care as well as children and adolescents with congenital or acquired dentofacial disorders who benefit from orthopedic and non-surgical treatments,” says Peter Stoustrup, who holds a PhD and is a specialist in orthodontics.
Throughout his career, Peter Stoustrup has focused particularly on juvenile idiopathic arthritis affecting the jaw joint and the facial growth. Since 2013, he has led research in three large international projects involving over 20 centers across Europe and North America. Today, this work forms the basis for how children and adolescents with TMJ arthritis and related orofacial manifestations are treated worldwide.
According to the newly appointed professor, the professorship will also contribute to the advancement of orthodontic education and training:
“Right now, orthodontics is undergoing a major digital transformation, and as a section with post-graduate orthodontic training, we need to be at the forefront. Fortunately, here in Aarhus we have a strong and growing group of colleagues and researchers who are ready to take on that challenge.”
“With the professorship in orthodontics, we at Aarhus University will be able to develop evidence-based teaching in both the undergraduate dental program and the three-year postgraduate training in orthodontics – ultimately benefiting patients,” says Peter Stoustrup, who also heads the Section for Orthodontics and is responsible for the postgraduate orthodontic specialisation program.
