Newsletter 60 from the Head of Department

Dear All, Here are frost clear news about IOOS.

INTERNAL AT THE INSTITUTE

Mental and practical preparation: New Pure profiles are coming - save the profile text

The personal websites, the so-called Pure profiles, of which we all have one, are outdated, and therefore we will soon get a new and more user-friendly design, which makes it easier to edit and customize the content. The new design will be rolled out throughout Aarhus University from week 48, and by far most of the content from the current Pure profiles will be automatically transferred to the new design, but we will have to manually update some parts ourselves. This applies initially to the profile text:

It will henceforth be mandatory for everyone to have a profile text on the Pure page. If you already have a profile text that you want to reuse, you can copy it into the new design.

AU IT, who is in charge of the project, sends us regular "how to do it" emails, and we have already received the first one, so this is just a reminder that we will all get a few Pure tasks in the coming time. Read more about changes and process in the article "There are new Pure profiles on the way".

RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND TEACHING

Research evaluation: How can we be even better?

At Aarhus University, all departments must evaluate the quality of their own research by the summer of 2025. We must too, and we have therefore set up a steering group to lead the work.

I myself sit in the steering group as Head of Department together with:

  • Ruben Pauwels (Representative of the research theme Intelligent Systems)
  • Rubens Spin-Neto (Representative of the research theme Diagnostics and Imaging)
  • Sebastian Schlafer (Representative of the research theme Oral Ecology and Inflammation)
  • Peter Svensson (Representative of the research topic Neuroscience and Rehabilitation)
  • Lene Baad-Hansen (Deputy Head for Research)
  • Jan Ulrik Rasmussen (Head of Secretariat)
  • Maja Thomsen (Management Consultant)

At IOOS, we are already starting the preliminary exercises, and over the next few months we will both evaluate ourselves and organize a visit from an external evaluation panel consisting of international researchers who can assess the current research quality at the department and make recommendations for improvements.

The research evaluation will be an interesting process, which I both hope and believe can contribute to strengthening the department's research. It is important that we occasionally stop and look at whether we can create even better conditions and direction for research. Whether we take advantage of the opportunities available and whether we use the resources meaningfully. It is important to emphasize that the research evaluation takes place at department level and not at individual level.

Helle Hornhaver receives Erasmus Plus grant for Circle U. visit on teaching collaboration

Helle Hornhaver has applied for and received an Erasmus Plus grant so that in January 2024 she can visit the Circle U. university King's College in London. Here, Helle will investigate the possibilities of collaborating on teaching on joint IOOS electives on sustainability in dentistry and an international aspect in the curriculum at the Clinical Dental Technician education. It will indeed be interesting.

Dental hygiene student shares student life on Instagram and in campaign material

Rokhsar (Sara) Waziris, who is a student on our dental hygiene education, talks about her study at IOOS via her Instagram profile ”tandplejerstuderende”. The Danish Dental Hygienist Association has also come across the profile and has been allowed to borrow Rokhsar (Sara) Waziris' photos for their study booklet for new dental hygiene students. The pamphlet can be downloaded at www.dansketandplejere.dk.

Dental student receive a scholarship from the Dental Association

Next year, dental student Laurits Kaaber will research whether it is possible to reduce the harmful effect of X-rays in connection with measurements for implants. The Dental Association supports this work with a scholarship of DKK 162,000. Associate Professor Louise Hauge Matzen, Section for Oral Radiology and Endodontics, is Laurits' supervisor.

Get legal help and guidance for your research project

Aarhus University and Region Central Jutland have established a joint legal advisory function to strengthen legal advice for researchers. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30 to 15.00 it is possible to meet with the lawyers (Aarhus University Hospital, entrance G, room G208-155) and get guidance, advice and help in preparing the necessary documents to complete a research project. It is also possible to arrange both telephone and video meetings with the lawyers.

The initiative is specifically aimed at researchers who work with health data and should be seen as a helping hand to navigate safely in an often complicated legal terrain. Read more about the advice on Region Central Jutland's website [In Danish]

NEWS ABOUT NAMES

Helle Leegård resigns from her position on 1 February 2024

Helle Leegård, Head Nurse and Manager of the Dental Nurses and the Sterilisation Center at IOOS, has chosen to resign from her position on 1 February 2024.

The job function will be advertised at the end of this week, but in a new form as two part-time positions in a management community. If all goes well, we expect the positions to be filled from April 2024. Contact Head of Clinics Rikke Svanterud Larsen if you have questions in the area until the positions are filled.

As leader of the department's largest group of employees, Helle has made a huge effort in the development process that has characterized IOOS over the past years. Thank you for good collaboration at IOOS!

Line Staun Larsen receives the Zendium Research Award 2023

Tenure-track Assistant Professor Line Staun Larsen, Section for Oral Ecology, is honoured with the Zendium Research Award 2023 for her research into the effect of high-dose fluoride toothpaste on the fluoride level in the oral cavity compared to regular fluoride toothpaste and because she is a skilled communicator of her field. Congratulations. Read more in the news on the website.

Ruben Pauwels receives a grant from Independent Research Fund Denmark

Over the next three years, Associate Professor Ruben Pauwels will develop a tool that can generate realistic X-ray images – here a panoramic X-ray – using artificial intelligence (AI). Ruben Pauwels has been granted DKK 2.2 million for that particular project by Independent Research Fund Denmark. Congratulations.

Award to Sebastian Schlafer for best research presentation at the Association of Dental Education in Europe conference 2023

Professor Sebastian Schlafer, Section for Oral Ecology, received the prize for the best oral E-poster presentation in the category pedagogical-didactic research at the Association of Dental Education in Europe (ADEE) conference 2023 in Liverpool. Under the heading "Does pre-class access improve video-based teaching of an aesthetic composite restoration in undergraduate dental education?" he had 5 min to present the results, and he did so with bravura – beautifully.

Dorthe Arenholt Bindslev has examined the teeth of the Grauballe man

The Grauballe man had pathological tooth wear at the age of 30 – probably because he mainly ate coarse food. In the latest issue of the Danish Dental Journal, which is also a 150th anniversary issue, forensic odontologist Dorthe Arenholt Bindslev writes about investigations into the Grauballe man's tooth wear.

And last but not least - I am looking forward to a 'hyggelig' rounding of the year together at our IOOS Christmas party Friday 8 December.

Best wishes,

Siri
