New professor will reduce the risk of complications from lifestyle diseases
Reimar Niels Wernich Thomsen is newly-appointed professor of metabolic disease epidemiology at Aarhus University. He conducts research into how more targeted treatment can reduce the risk of serious complications in connection with e.g. overweight and type 2 diabetes.
Overweight, elevated levels of fat and cholesterol in the blood, high blood pressure and high blood sugar are termed metabolic diseases and occur due to factors such as lifestyle and genetics. People with metabolic disorders have an increased risk of developing complications such as cardiovascular disease, as well as cancer, neurological disorders, infections and psychiatric disorders. Newly-appointed professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Reimar Niels Wernich Thomsen, conducts research into epidemiology and complications in people with metabolic diseases. He makes particularly use of the unique Danish health registers and biobanks in his research.
One of the projects in which he is currently involved studies 10,000 people with newly discovered type 2 diabetes. The patients' clinical details are registered in a database, which he correlates with the large population-based registers. The goal is to become better at predicting the course of the disease and which treatment will work best for the individual patient. The professorship will in this way contribute to more individual treatment, which reduces the risk of complications and increases the quality of life of people with metabolic diseases.
