Newsletter 62 from the Head of Department

Dear All, Welcome back to the start of semester 2024 and the first news of the year.

INTERNAL AT THE INSTITUTE

Secondary employment must be reported to Aarhus University as the main employer and published on your Pure profile before 1 March

If, in addition to a main employment at the University, you also have a side job, such as an employed dentist or dental hygienist in practice, a paid consultant for agencies and councils or a paid teacher in another institution, then you must remember to declare it - you must inform Aarhus University as the main employer and this must appear on your Pure profile.

It is crucial for both our own and the University's credibility that we disclose openly and transparent if we have a side job or otherwise have interests that potentially could cast doubt on our impartiality and independence.

The deadline for reporting is 1 March 2024.

If you are in doubt about how much or how little you should enter, or how to do it, you can read more on the employee website.

LinkedIn course

If you would like to get better at LinkedIn, the Faculty of Health holds two free employee courses, which include the good LinkedIn profile and how to communicate effectively and on which topics - registration and more info via the links:

Changed parking rules around the Department

From 1 January this year, parking for two hours for free around the Department is over. Aarhus Municipality has changed the parking zones in the city center and has, among other things, introduced paid parking also for the first two hours in front of the Department. It is nice to know for you, but perhaps most important for our patients, who have probably used the free parking in the past. The patient letter templates in our electronic patient record KLIPS are in the process of being changed so that patients will be informed.

RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND TEACHING

Here are the teachers of the year 2023at IOOS

I wrote something wrong in the last newsletter, and I therefore bring a correction here. The students have voted, and here are the teachers of the year:

  • Sanne Molsen, dental hygienist education
  • Britt Hansen Bomberg, clinical dental technician education
  • Karina K. Johnsen, dental education

Congratulations on the recognition to all three of you - also to Linda Fischer, who received this year's bouquet from the revue team at the dental education.

Research evaluation - thanks for the input

The compulsory work with the department's research evaluation is in full swing. Right now we are working on compiling the many good and useful inputs you have provided from the professional environments. Our experience is that your contribution both includes the necessary details about our current status and provides valuable pointers for the future development of the department's research. Thank you!

The research evaluation must result in a department report, which consists of three parts:

  1. The department's self-evaluation, which will be written based on input from the professional environment (deadline end of February 2024).
  2. External evaluation panel's report – the panel that we are putting together will visit in September/October, where their report will also be drawn up.
  3. Summary and follow-up plan from the head of department, we will write it in the period November 2024 - April 2025.

The department report forms part of an overall research evaluation of the faculty and Aarhus University.

If you have any questions about the process or the research evaluation itself, you are welcome to contact Deputy Head for Research Lene Baad-Hansen.

We must continue to register all fund applications in ReAp

In reality, there is nothing new under the sun: We must – just as we usually do – register all funding applications for which we are the main applicant in ReAp.

This is important, because in connection with the ongoing financial audit in 2023, the University's accountant has identified and commented on a lack of documentation and an overview of the process of externally funded projects at Aarhus University. The accounting firm recommends, and University Director Kristian Thorn therefore recommends, that all submitted applications be registered systematically.

With us, it happens in ReAp.

You register your fund applications in ReAp via the Faculty of Health's employee website, where you will also find guidance if the procedure hits a snag: https://health.medarbejdere.au.dk/en/research-support/reap

Four students are "Brush Friends" in a project for children and parents with modest resources

In collaboration with Tandplejen Aarhus, four of our talented students on the dental hygienist education have started the project "Tandplejen's Brush Friends". The goal is to improve the dental health of children living in areas where parents' resources are limited. The four students, Sophia, Amalie, Anne and Josefine, have been out to primary schools and helped children in 2nd grade to brush their teeth and talk about good oral hygiene. And the project has borne fruit: there is an improvement both in the amount of plaque and in the children's interest in their own teeth. Important initiative!

The voluntary project is also mentioned in the magazine Tandplejeren (June 2023) and can be followed on Instagram: tandplejens_boerstevenner

Document service: Do you need a digital copy of an article that you do not have access to?

Then there is good news from the library. With the Royal Library's document service, you as teachers or researchers can order and have digital copies of articles delivered to you that you do not already have direct digital access to. That is how it works:

The material may be shared internally at the university within the framework of the university's agreement with Copydan Tekst and Node. NOTE: This ONLY applies to material ordered and delivered via the document service. It is NOT a general rule.

KB Dokumentservice is a pilot project which runs until 1 April 2024 and possibly longer.

If you have any questions, send them to dokumentservice@kb.dk

NEWS ABOUT NAMES

Ruben Pauwels receives 'seed funding' from Circle U. for project on Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Associate Professor Ruben Pauwels has sought and obtained the very competitive 'seed funding' from the strategically important European University Alliance Circle U. The seed funding supports small bottom-up projects that can eventually grow larger. Ruben Pauwels is spearheading the project, which takes place in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Oslo and King's College London and is about new ways to train AI models to make the correct diagnosis.

Andreas Schloss is the new clinical team leader

The position of clinical team leader has been newly created, after Head Nurse Helle Leegård's position ended in January this year, and from 1 March 2024, Andreas Schloss is employed as clinical team leader of the dental nurses. Andreas Schloss was born, raised and trained as a nurse (2003) in Germany. Andreas has a diploma in management and, among other things, was Head Nurse at Silkeborg Regional Hospital and at Aarhus University Hospital. You will all probably meet Andreas in the corridors, so give him a warm welcome.

The process of recruiting the second and final clinical team leader is underway and we hope to be able to hire from 1 April.

Peter Svensson and Jan Wolff resign their positions at IOOS

Two of the Department's Professors resign their positions at their own request:

  • Peter Svensson, Section for Orofacial Pain and Jaw Function, will stop at the end of February 2024.
  • Jan Wolff, Section for Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Pathology, will stop at the end of March 2024 and will be at the institute until 12 February.

Both Peter Svensson and Jan Wolff are highly skilled in their respective fields of research. They have contributed significant research and education that has lifted and strengthened their respective fields for the benefit of practitioners and patients, both here at the Department and in the world, and they have rightly garnered great recognition in the research environment.

A big thank you for your professional work at IOOS and Aarhus University, and all the best in the future.

Invitation to the inaugural lectures of Professors Sebastian Schlafer, Lise-Lotte Kirkevang and Rubens Spin-Neto

Sebastian Schlafer was appointed as Professor of Cariology in late summer 2023, and you are all invited to Sebastian's inaugural lecture 'Going Micro', which will be held on Friday 1 March 2024 at 2 p.m. The lecture is held in English in Apollonia (1612-018E). Registration before February 15.

The blizzard at the beginning of January unfortunately put an end to the two planned inaugural lectures for Lise-Lotte Kirkevang, Professor of Endodontics, and Rubens Spin-Neto, Professor of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology and Imaging, who also both were appointed as Professors at the Department in late summer last year.

Fortunately, we have now found a new date, and it will be Monday 18 March 2024 at 13.00. The lectures will be held in English in continuation of each other in the AIAS (Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies) auditorium, 'An Endodontic Journey' and 'Past, Present, and Future Challenges in Dentomaxillofacial Radiology and Imaging'. Registration no later than February 25.

You are also very welcome to the celebration receptions after the inaugural lectures.

Bente Nyvad comments on a caries study in the media

In December, researchers from University of Copenhagen published a study on a new lozenge against caries, which, according to the first author, showed promising results and a good effect on the children the tablet was tested on, and it resonated in the media landscape. TV2 asked Professor Emerita Bente Nyvad to give a second opinion on the study design and results, and she raised several points of criticism. It is important and interesting that we in the mass media also use our expert knowledge to nuance the very premises for the way in which research and new knowledge is created.

The article "New lozenge can solve huge global health problem" [In Danish] can be read at nyheder.tv2.dk.

Best wishes,

Siri
