Newsletter 50 from the Head of Department
Dear All, The exams are almost finished, and we will send all our graduates out into the world on Friday the 1st of July with a celebration in the Aula. I also look forward to our IOOS Joint Day tomorrow Wednesday, where we can become wiser about present and future generations in society and in the labour market, workplaces and work environment - and with time to be together outside of our busy everyday lives.

INTERNAL NEWS
Updated guidelines for remote working = as much physical attendance as possible
Based on the experience with the corona shutdowns, the university has updated its guidelines for working from home - or remote working, as it is now called. The guidelines are in line with our own practice and basically mean that we work as much as possible at and from the department, so that we ensure coherence and a collegial environment. If you occasionally need the flexibility to remote working, this must be agreed with the immediate manager.
See the guidelines on the employee page or conveyed in article form.
Grønnegården was inaugurated
On Thursday 9 June, Dean Anne-Mette Hvas cut the red string, and then Grønnegården was officially inaugurated. After a few months with machines and construction noise and after several years with a grey car park, Grønnegården is now finally green again, and we have a really nice outdoor environment for both employees and students. A big thank you to the canteen committee for sparring throughout the construction process and to the IOOS Institute Forum, which persistently insisted on celebrating all that can be celebrated. And thank you to all of you who helped make the day festive!
Postdoc Anne Birkeholm Jensen is our representative in the Faculty of Health's new gender equality committee
Health has set up a new gender equality committee, which will help to push things forward and promote initiatives across the faculty that contribute to creating gender equality. This applies to students, academic staff, technical-administrative staff and managers. The committee consists of twelve members, each appointed for a three-year term, while the dean is a permanent member and sits at the end of the table as the chairperson.
At IOOS, we have appointed postdoc Anne Birkeholm Jensen as our representative in the Gender Equality Committee. Contact Anne if you have ideas, suggestions or issues that need to be addressed in the committee. I am also a member of the committee, as I am one of the faculty's representatives in Aarhus University’s diversity and equality committee.
RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND TEACHING
The world's first dentomaxillofacial MR scanner lands on IOOS this summer
We can actually present a bit of world news, because in a very short time the department will receive an MR scanner, which is the first of its kind and specially developed to work specifically with dental imaging. The advantage of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is that patients are not exposed to ionizing radiation and that MR scanning provides broader diagnostic options.
The MR scanner will be placed at the Section for Oral Radiology. For the past four years, Associate Professor Rubens Spin-Neto has worked hard to make IOOS the world's test center for the new dental MR scanner - and now he has succeeded! Therefore, we can now lead research and development of dental MR imaging.
The new MR scanner is part of a research agreement between IOOS and industry partners Dentsply-Sirona and Siemens Healthineers. The MR scanner has a value of approx. 5 mio. DKK. In addition to the installation of the equipment, the agreement also includes 2.5 mio. DKK for scientific and technical staff. Two of the section's PhD students are already working on MRI-related projects, and they will make use of the new MR scanner. The first patient photos are expected to be taken after the summer holidays.
Our specialist education in Orthodontics receives an international quality accreditation
After five years of trial membership, our specialist education in Orthodontics has just been admitted to The Network of Erasmus Based European Orthodontic Postgraduate Programs (NEBEOP). It is a huge international recognition of our specialist education, as the requirements for admission are extensive. The application itself was more than 200 pages, and in March there was a ‘site visit’ by two inspectors, who were to assess our facilities and interview both employees, residents in Orthodontics and the management team. We were approved and even with exceptionally few remarks. Great and strong work by the Section for Orthodontics!
Read the interview with Peter Stoustrup, director of the specialist dental education in Orthodontics in the next issue of the faculty newsletter Inside Health.
"Intelligent systems" will be IOOS' new research theme
"Intelligent systems". This is the name of the department's fourth and brand new research theme, which we have decided to create. Professor Jan Wolff will be the theme's strategic research coordinator, and some staff members who are currently part of ‘Function, Pain and Rehabilitation’ will move on to the new research theme. After the summer holidays, we will revise our research websites to reflect all four research themes.
Deadline is approaching: Nominations for honorary doctors 2023
It is the time of the year when Aarhus University distributes honorary doctorates to suitable graduates from international universities and research institutions. If you collaborate with someone who has a strong connection to Aarhus University, meet the requirements and deserve the credit, send the nomination (max. five pages) per email to Henry Andreasen from the Faculty Secretariat (ha@au.dk):
• Motivation (including affiliation with Aarhus University)
• CV (including education, employment, prices, H-index, citations and contact information)
• List of publications
The internal deadline for nominations is 15 August 2022. Henry Andreasen can also handle questions and other practicalities.
The Kitchen offers entrepreneurship assistance
Both employees and students can get support to create their own business in The Kitchen, which helps with advice and access to investors and workshops that equip entrepreneurial-minded employees to take the next step. The Kitchen, which is housed in the University City, has made a video with reports from researchers who have turned their research into business. See if you have the courage to start a company and translate your knowledge into goods - and contact innovation manager Jeppe Dørup Olesen at jdo@au.dk, if you want to hear more about the possibilities at The Kitchen.

For the 9th time in a row, the Section for Oral Radiology receives an award from conference
PhD student Julie Suhr Villefrance won 2nd place at a research competition during the 18th edition of the European Congress of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology, which took place in Poland this June. She did so with her presentation of the abstract: Early detection of external cervical resorption in posterior teeth: A radiographic, cross-sectional study of an adolescent population. The study contributes with important knowledge about what to pay special attention to when looking for external cervical resorption on bite-wings in a youth population, and what the prevalence is of this pathological change. The study was made in collaboration with Aalborg Community Dentistry and is also a collaboration between the disciplines of endodontics and oral radiology. Congratulations to Julie.
Research year student wins Young Investigator Award
More awards: Muhammed Alparslan Gøkhan, a research year student affiliated with the Section for Orofacial Pain and Jaw Function, has won an International Association of Dental Research (IADR) Neuroscience Young Investigator Award. He did so for his poster presentation during the IADR conference on June 16. Here he presented his research year project, which is about 'burning mouth syndrome'.
Wishing you all a good and well-deserved summer holiday,
Siri
