Newsletter 52 from the Head of Department
Dear All, I hope you have had a good autumn holiday - here are autumn news from IOOS.

INTERNAL NEWS
Welcome to two new Head of Sections at IOOS
Before the summer holidays, we began to investigate whether it was possible and what it would mean to merge sections, as the Section for Paedodontics, Section for Periodontology and Section for Oral Ecology and Caries Control had expressed a desire to strengthen the professional and social environment and create more rational workflows in their sections.
That process is now so far that:
- Associate Professor David Kraft takes on the function as Head of Section for the subject areas of Oral Ecology, Caries Control, Periodontology and Paedodontics
- Associate Professor Louise Hauge Matzen takes on the function as Head of Section for the subject areas of Oral Radiology and Endodontics
They have both been appointed for the period 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2025, with the possibility of extension.
We are now working on what the new sections should be called and how we will implement the planned organizational description.
Huge thanks to Professor Ann Wenzel and Professor Bente Nyvad for their great efforts as section leaders for the Section for Oral Radiology and the Section for Oral Ecology and Caries Control, respectively. You have built impressive and recognized research environments, and this will now be carried forward in an eminent way by the two new Section Heads and teams.
mitHR replaces AUHRA, and therefore MUS is slightly different this year
In 2023, the university's HR system AUHRA will be replaced by the new mitHR, and this may have an impact on the agreement forms that we use during the Staff Development Dialogue (SDD).
This year, you should therefore be aware that:
- Agreement forms do not transfer from AUHRA to mitHR.
- The agreement forms must be downloaded from AUHRA before the new year and stored locally and securely so that they can be uploaded in mitHR during 2023. You have to do this yourself as an employee - and if you don't do it, all previous and current agreement forms are lost.
- AUHRA does not send reminders for follow-up on agreements.
The Employee Development Interviews (MUS) website has been updated, so you will also find a video that describes what is special about MUS this year.
RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND TEACHING
Help: We lack censors in our external censor corps
We are fighting to cover all our exams with external censorship on both the dentistry, dental hygiene and clinical dental technician programs - we simply need more external censors in our censor corps. Therefore, it would be a great help if you would reach out to your networks within your respective subject areas and ask if anyone would like to help with the examination of our students. The censor task is remunerated, and unlike before, interested professional colleagues can continuously apply for a place in the censor corps:
- Dentistry: Link to the application form [In Danish] and further information on the website [In Danish]
- Dental hygienist and clinical dental technician: Link to application form [In Danish] and further information on the website [In Danish]
If you have questions about the censor corps or recruitment, you are welcome to contact education advisor Bjørn Blidegaard from Health Studies.
Workshop help for IOOS Associate Professors and Professors to attract international Marie Curie postdocs
Dr. Caroline Ang, who is eminent at writing fund applications and has previously visited Faculty of Health with great success, now returns with her colleague – Laura Wisby – from the British WisbAng Research Development.
Over the next year, they will help us fulfill the ambition to get more postdocs through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships program.
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships program supports postdocs who want to develop their careers internationally. The Marie Curie program is an obvious opportunity to get in touch with and get funding for ambitious talents from all over the world.
The EU's deadline for applications to the Marie Curie program is September 2023, and the new postdocs are expected to be employed in the summer of 2024 – by then we will hopefully be well past the qualified hiring freeze.
The first step on the way is three sessions in November 2022 aimed at Associate Professors and Professors who are considering hiring an international postdoc.
Mark your calendar now:
• Tuesday 22 Nov. at 13:00-14:30 Session 1 (Targeted Department of Biomedicine)
• Tuesday 22 Nov. at 15:00-16:30 Session 2 (Targeted Department of Clinical Medicine)
• Thursday 24 Nov. at 11:00-12:30 Session 3 (Targeted Department of Dentistry and Oral Health, Department of Public Health and Department of Forensic Medicine)
You can participate in the session that best fits the calendar, regardless of department affiliation.
More information and registration link will follow later.
Attention to gender and inclusion in research applications – new website helps on the way
In Horizon Europe and several other foundations, there is a focus on gender, diversity and inclusion in research. It has become part of the assessment criteria that diversity is addressed in the application. And it is not only about equality in institutions or gender balance in the consortium. It is equally about attention to gender, diversity and inclusion in research and innovation.
Therefore, Aarhus University has created the website Sex and gender in grant proposals, which can help researchers think about sex and gender, diversity and inclusion in research design.
Health Student Research Prize 2023
If you are supervisor to a student who has excelled through a particularly excellent written work, then you now have the opportunity to nominate her or him for Health's Student Research Prize 2023.
The award was introduced by the Academic Council with the aim of celebrating and highlighting the breadth of student research at Faculty of Health. We therefore encourage supervisors from all departments to nominate a talented student, Research Year student or Integrated PhD student.
The work for which the award can be given, can take many forms (Master’s thesis, article, Research Year report, Bachelor’s project, etc.) and must be completed during the study period.
Deadline for nominations is 21 November 2022.
Read more about who can be nominated, how you nominate, and what criteria are used for the assessment: https://health.medarbejdere.au.dk/en/uddannelsesomraadet/undervisning-og-eksamen/underviser-og-studenterpriser/health-student-research-prize/
Invitation: Nobel laureate Edvard Moser talks about 'the brain's inner GPS'
Today, October 24, we will be visited by yet another Nobel laureate. Professor, Dr. Edvard Moser visits Faculty of Health and gives a 'Nobel Laurate Talk' about the brain's internal GPS. With the presentation "Neural network computation in space-coding cells of the entorhinal cortex", Edvard Moser talks about his discovery of the so-called grid cell, which is crucial for our sense of place and which earned him the Nobel Prize in 2014.
The lecture takes place in Aulaen on 24 October at 12:45 – 1:45pm. Anyone with an interest in brain research is welcome! The event is free, but requires registration via the Conference Manager. Read more on the website.

Nature journal focuses on our guidelines for the treatment of temporomandibular joint arthritis
Nature Reviews in Rheumatology – which is the journal Nature's specific journal of arthritis – has focused on the recently published interdisciplinary and international guidelines for the treatment of temporomandibular joint arthritis. They do so in the article "New guide calls for interdisciplinary approach to TMJ arthritis symptoms". It is Head of Section for Orthodontics, Associate Professor Peter Stoustrup, who is heading the guidelines, which have been created through the interdisciplinary research collaboration called "TMJaw". The research collaboration began in a small way between Aarhus University and Oslo University 12 years ago and has grown into a large international network, whose work is now noted by the highest ranked arthritis journal worldwide. It makes a difference.
Fun facts about the 'Dental School'
If you didn't read the short article 'Fun facts about the faculty: Aarhus School of Dentistry' in the Faculty of Health's newsletter (22 September), take the opportunity here when time permits. The article contains both old photos, the anecdote about the principal's chain in gold and the story of a horrific assassination attempt on a deputy head of the technology department back in the 1960s...
Hot water
And then finally, a warming piece of information (together with a call to limit the use of hot water to what is absolutely necessary) – there will continue to be hot water in all taps, both in the clinics and bathrooms.
Best wishes,
Siri
